The Vietnamese language is the national language of Vietnam and has about 80 million speakers. It is the most widely-spoken member of the Austro-Asiatic language family. Vietnamese developed in what is now northern Vietnam. When China grew to be the region's most important political power around the 7th century, Vietnamese absorbed a great deal of vocabulary from Chinese, as well as the writing system and some grammar.
European influence grew beginning in the 17th century, and under French occupation beginning in the late 1800s, a modified Roman alphabet was adopted. Its closest major relative is Khmer, spoken mainly in Cambodia, although the languages are quite different due to historical influences.
