Information about the Turkish language

The Turkish language is a Turkic language spoken by around 80 million people worldwide, mainly in Turkey and Cyprus. Inscriptions in Old Turkic have been found in modern-day Mongolia dating to the 8th century, and a dictionary of dialects was compiled in the 11th century. During the Early Middle Ages, Turkic tribes spread west from their Central and North Asian homelands. Ottoman Turkish, spoken within the empire beginning in the 14th century, was heavily influenced by Persian and Arabic. When the modern republic was founded in 1923, language reforms were so effective that modern Turks can no longer understand the Turkish that was spoken 100 years ago. The closest relatives to Turkish are Azerbaijani and Turkmen.
