The Spanish language is a Romance language which is spoken by around 500 million people in Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and a number of other places where it is increasing in importance as a second language.
Spanish developed out of Vulgar (common) Latin, which was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. During its formative years, Spanish was strong influenced by Basque, a native Iberian language, and Arabic under the Moors.
During the imperial period of the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish colonies brought the language to the Americas, where the majority of Spanish speakers now live. Spanish is closely related to Portuguese, and more distantly to other Romance languages like French and Italian.
