Information about the Serbian language

The Serbian language is a South Slavic language which is spoken by about 10 million speakers, mostly in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the surrounding Balkan countries. Serbian is a member of the Serbo-Croatian macrolanguage, which was spoken in former Yugoslavia. Until the 19th century, the ethnic groups in the area spoke very similar but nonstandard languages or dialects. In 1850 the language was unified based on the dialects of Belgrade and Zagreb, and it remained so until the dissolution of Yugoslavia beginning in 1991. Serbo-Croatian now spoken by over 16 million people in four recognized forms: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. It is closely related with the other languages spoken on the Balkan Peninsula, and more distantly with Russian.
