Information about the Scottish Gaelic language

The Scottish Gaelic language is a Celtic language of the Indo-European language family spoken by about 65,000 speakers in Scotland and other Scottish communities. The Celtic languages were first spoken on the British Isles as early as 1500 BC, and the Goidelic (Gaelic) language branch evolved in Ireland. Middle Irish was brought to the area now known as Scotland by Irish settlers around the 4th century, and after the 12th century Scottish Gaelic developed into its own language and began displacing the British languages of the region. Although the language is endangered, intensive revival efforts have saved it from extinction and it has been gaining ground. The closest related languages are Irish and Manx.
