Sanskrit, the classical language of India, is one of the oldest known languages in the world. Vedic Sanskrit was spoken in the 2nd millennium BC and was used to write the Vedas, the oldest religious texts of Hinduism. Around the 7th century BC, Classical Sanskrit became the dominant written language for literature and religion, and after the 4th century BC, Buddhist scholars began using Sanskrit for their religious texts, where local languages had previously been used.
As local languages diverged further from Sanskrit, though, its use declined. Although Sanskrit is no longer the sole language of communication for any community and is considered by many scholars to be somewhat frozen, it is widely studied in literary and religious circles, with around 200,000 speakers. It is related to the other 22 official languages in India, including Hindi and Urdu.
