The Russian language is the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages. It is spoken by nearly 300 million speakers all over the world, mostly in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Russian evolved from Proto-Slavic, which was spoken throughout Eastern Europe before the 7th century. By the 10th century, Old East Slavic had split from Proto-Slavic, and the dialects of this language eventually become Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian.
The alphabet was reformed under Peter the Great beginning in the late 17th century, and the synthesis of modern Russian from the spoken and church forms began in earnest in the early 18th century. Today Russian is spoken not only in Russia but as a widely-known and common language among many former Soviet states.
