The Portuguese language is a Romance language spoken by nearly 200 million native speakers in Portugal, Brazil and some other countries. Portuguese began evolving from Latin when that language came to the Iberian Peninsula with the Romans in the 3rd century BC. After Rome fell, the area saw Germanic and Moorish invasions, which left their influence on the independently developing language.
In the 13th century, shortly after Portugal became an independent kingdom, Portuguese was declared the preferred language. Beginning in the 15th century, it spread to Asia, Africa, and Brazil with Portuguese traders and colonists. It is closely related to Spanish and more distantly to French and Italian.
