The Polish language is spoken by over 40 million people, mostly in Poland. Polish began to develop from Proto-Slavic when that language suddenly spread from a concentrated area in modern-day Ukraine across what is now Eastern Europe after the 5th century. By the 10th century, Polish and other Proto-Slavic descendants had differentiated into their own languages.
The Polish alphabet was developed through the Middle Ages, and today Polish is the most widely spoken West Slavic language. There are several dialects, but they are all mutually intelligible, and almost all people who live in Poland are native speakers. Other relatives include Russian and Ukrainian.
