Phoenician is a Semitic language that was spoken in Canaan along the eastern Mediterranean coast, including Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Israel. Not much is known about the Phoenician language; however, there are a few references to it found in other texts, and the Punic language, a dialect of Phoenician, is better documented.
The Phoenician alphabet, which was used 3000 years ago, was more influential than the language itself and was the predecessor of the Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin writing systems. The Punic dialect was spoken in North Africa as late as the 7th century, although it is now extinct. Its closest living relatives are Hebrew and Arabic.
