The Persian language is an Indo-European language which is spoken by over 100 million speakers, mostly in Iran and Afghanistan. Persian developed after 1500 BC from the languages spoken in the southwest Iranian plateau around modern-day Shiraz.
Old Persian was written using cuneiform, with the earliest inscriptions dating to 600 BC. Through the Middle Ages, Persian was written in a modified Arabic script and was one of the primary languages used in trade, literature, and poetry, with significant influence in the Islamic world and on languages of the surrounding regions.
Persian has three main dialects, which are mutually intelligible with each other, and is distantly related to Kurdish.
