Information about the Old Norse language

The Old Norse language is the North Germanic language that was spoken in Scandinavia during the Viking Age from the 8th to 14th centuries. Old Norse developed from the Proto-Germanic dialects spoken by the tribes who inhabited what are now Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, as well as parts of Great Britain.

During the 14th century, the Scandinavian languages – Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, and Faroese – began evolving from the dialects of Old Norse. The last known Old Norse texts are dated from the 15th century. Although Old Norse died out centuries ago, it left lasting influences on many other language families, including Celtic, Slavic, and Uralic languages.
