The Korean language is the official language of North Korea and South Korea. It is spoken today by about 80 million people, mostly in those countries and in immigrant communities in China, Japan, and other countries. The origin of Korean is unknown, and it is considered an isolate language.
Old Korean was spoken from the 1st century and was recorded in Chinese texts. Chinese was a major influence on the language, which retains many Chinese words. A native Korean writing system was developed in the 15th century. Since the countries' split in 1948, distinct dialects and changes in the writing systems have developed.
