The Japanese language is spoken by about 130 million people in Japan and Japanese communities, as well as around 1 million second-language speakers. It is considered an isolate language – scholars have not yet been able to link it to any other existing language – but it is thought that it first came to Japan in the 2nd century BC.
Modern Japanese contains a great number of dialects, although most Japanese can understand the standard (Tokyo) dialect.
