Information about the Italian language

The Italian language is a Romance language which is spoken by about 63 million people, mostly in Italy and Switzerland, with another 20 million second-language speakers in various countries. Italian is the closest living language to Latin, from which it had evolved by the 900s. For centuries, each city-state in Italy spoke its own distinct dialect, many of which were not mutually intelligible with each other. The Florentine dialect of Dante's Divina Commedia became the standard for written Italian during the 14th century, and the language became standardized with the founding of the Italian language academy in 1582. Although most Italians know Standard Italian, many still prefer using their regional dialects. As a Romance language, Italian is related to Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
