The Irish language is a Celtic language of the Indo-European language family spoken by up to 80,000 native speakers and another 300,000 second-language speakers in Ireland and the U.K. It is in the same language family as Scottish Gaelic and Manx and is closely related to the Brythonic languages as well.
Ancient Celts settled in Ireland sometime in the 2nd or 3rd millennium BC, and inscriptions in Irish from the 4th century AD have been found. English displaced Irish as the majority language in the 19th century. Although culture and language revival efforts have kept it from becoming extinct, Irish remains an endangered language with far more second-language speakers than native speakers.
