The Illyrian languages are several dozen Indo-European languages spoken by the ancient tribes who lived in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula and possibly a small area in southeastern Italy. Not much is known about the language because no literature survives. The area was settled by the Illyrians' ancestors around 1000 BC, and their existence was first recorded in Greek texts from the 4th century BC.
Over the years, the Illyrians were assimilated into surrounding peoples, and they were last recorded in the 7th century. Although the Illyrian languages went extinct between the 2nd and 6th centuries AD, some scholars believe that some dialects survived in small communities and evolved into modern Albanian.
