The Igbo language is spoken by over 20 million people mostly in Nigeria and Cameroon. The language is spoken by the Igbo people descended from the Kingdom of Nri, which may have existed as early as the 9th century, although the area was originally settled from 6500-4500 BC.
Prior to the 16th century, written Igbo used a neighboring language's writing system, but a modified Roman alphabet was adopted in 1962. The language was standardized in 1972 based on two of the main dialects. Igbo is related to over a thousand other Niger-Congo languages spoken by communities who live throughout sub-Saharan and Central Africa.
