Information about the Hebrew language

Hebrew is a Semitic language in the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is spoken by over 5 million native speakers, mostly in Israel and in numerous Jewish communities around the world. One of the oldest attested languages, Hebrew was spoken during the times recorded in the Old Testament, and inscriptions have been found dating as early as the 11th century BC.

During the 4th century BC it was displaced by Aramaic, and after the 1st century AD it was infrequently used as a spoken language until being revived in the late 1800. It is now one of the official languages of Israel. While all of its nearest language relatives are extinct, it is closely related to Arabic.
