The Hawaiian language is an Austronesian language which is spoken by about 27,000 speakers in the State of Hawaii, one of the United States, although there are only a few thousand native speakers and the language is endangered.
Hawaii was settled by Polynesians as far back as 300 AD, after which time the language evolved in near isolation until British captain James Cook arrived in 1778. Its closest relatives are the Marquesic languages of French Polynesia, and it is also related to languages spoken on islands throughout the Pacific, including Māori in New Zealand, Samoan, Tagalog in the Philippines, and Malay and Javanese.
