Information about the Greek language

Greek is one of the earliest attested Indo-European languages spoken today by about 13 million native speakers living in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and other countries. Its ancestral language, which was spoken 5000 years ago on the Balkan Peninsula, developed into Mycenaean after reaching the Greek peninsula in the 17th century BC. At that time, Greek was written in a script called Linear B, but the Greek alphabet was developed in the 8th century BC.

Throughout history, various dialects have come into prominence, including Attic Greek (used in the classics) and Koine Greek (used in the New Testament). Greek is in its own language family, and its close relatives are all extinct or endangered.
