The Gaulish language is a Celtic language that was spoken in Gaul, a large region in what are now France, Belgium, and parts of Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany. Other closely related Continental Celtic dialects and languages were spoken throughout Europe as far as Anatolia, in modern Turkey.
Gaulish was spoken in the region before the 6th century BC, and inscriptions have been found dating back to the 3rd century BC. Gaulish was spoken in the 2nd century AD and possibly even 400 years later before becoming extinct. The French language has a few hundred words of Gaulish origin.
