The Finnish language is a member of the Finno-Ugric language family with about 5 million native speakers, mostly in Finland. Finnish possibly originated from a language spoken around the Ural Mountains at least 4000 years ago.
Once in the area that is now Finland, it split into two distinct dialect groups, both of which are still spoken today. During the Middle Ages, Swedish was the dominant language. In the 16th century, Finnish became standardized and written, and it has become the dominant language since then.
Finnish is closely related to Estonian and distantly related to Hungarian.
