The Etruscan language was the language of Etruria, an ancient civilization that lived in what is now central Italy from the 9th century BC. Through Greek colonies and trade, the Etruscans absorbed many elements of Greek culture, later passing them on to the Romans.
Etruria had been absorbed by Rome by the 1st century BC, and Etruscan was entirely displaced by Latin. Although some place names persisted, most of Etruria's history has been lost. Etruscan is a language isolate with no known relatives. Although thousands of inscriptions exist, mostly in Tuscany, not enough of the language exists to reconstruct it.
