The Egyptian language is an Afro-Asiatic language spoken in ancient Egypt. It is one of the oldest known languages, with written hieroglyphic texts dating before 3000 BC. Egyptian was the language of the pharaohs and the builders of the pyramids and the Sphinx.
As the language evolved over the centuries, it remained the primary language spoken in Egypt. The written language was mostly uniform, but the spoken dialects varied greatly. By the 1st century, the language had become what is now referred to as Coptic, and writers began using a modified Greek alphabet.
Arabic displaced Coptic beginning in the 7th century, and today Coptic exists only as the language of the Coptic churches, with a few fluent speakers and growing interest in its revival.
