The Cushitic languages are a subgroup of the Afro-Asiatic languages spoken by over 60 million people in the Horn of Africa (Northeast Africa). The name "Cushitic" comes from the biblical figure Cush, who was Noah's grandson and is traditionally believed to be the ancestor of the people who live in what is now Ethiopia.
During the first millennium, the area traded with Egypt, India, Arabia, and the Roman Empire, and Mogadishu was one of the most important port cities of the region. The largest languages in this group are Oromo and Somali, with over 50 million speakers primarily in Ethiopia and Somalia. Other Cushitic languages are spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea, and surrounding countries.
