The Cornish language is a Celtic language of the Indo-European language family spoken by a few hundred speakers in Cornwall, the United Kingdom. It is in the same language family as Welsh and Breton and is closely related to the Gaelic languages as well.
The Cornish language developed as Britons relocated to the southwestern areas of Great Britain in the 6th century after the arrival of Anglo-Saxon settlers. As English became more dominant, it displaced Cornish almost entirely.
Just before the last speakers were lost in the early 20th century, a small Cornish revival movement began. Nowadays there are several thousand people who know at least some Cornish, although there are many fewer native speakers and fewer still who use the language primarily.
