The Chinese language is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken by about 1.3 billion people in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and other regions with Chinese communities.
As one of the oldest written surviving languages, Old Chinese has been discovered on written texts dating from before 1000 BC. As the influence of the Chinese dynasties grew, many surrounding cultures adopted Chinese as the language of government and adapted its writing system, including Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
Chinese is not a unified language; it is a group of dialects, some of which are so disparate as to be considered their own languages. However, written Chinese is relatively standard across dialects. As an official language in China, Taiwan, and Singapore, the standard Mandarin spoken dialect has by far more native speakers than any other language in the world.
