The Breton language is a Celtic language of the Indo-European language family spoken by over 200,000 speakers in Brittany, a region in northern France near Great Britain. It is in the same language family as Welsh and Cornish and is closely related to the Gaelic languages as well.
The Breton language began to develop when Britons left central Great Britain in the 6th century after the arrival of Anglo-Saxon settlers, bringing their British Celtic language to the area now known as Brittany. Breton is now seriously endangered.
It has no official status in France and was banned from schools till the middle of the 20th century. Over a million people can speak some Breton, but few use it regularly.
