The Basque language is spoken by over 650,000 people, mostly ethnic Basques, who live in the Basque Country, a region of the Pyrenees Mountains on the border between Spain and France.
Although Basque is surrounded by French and Spanish, it is considered to be its own top-level language family, the last pre-Indo-European language remaining in Europe.
There are references as early as the 1st century to the Vascones people, who were possibly the ancestors of modern Basques. Basque has official status in Spain but is endangered.
It began to be standardized in 1968 in an effort to promote its use, and ensure its survival, via education, media, and increased interregional communication.
