The Native Australian languages include several hundred indigenous languages native to Australia and some neighboring islands. The origins of the Australian Aborigines are unknown, but some scholars believe that they settled the area over 50,000 years ago.
After this time, the Australian Aborigine languages developed in isolation for thousands of years, and they are unrelated to any other known language family. Most languages have become extinct since the first contact with Europeans, and the vast majority of the remaining languages are endangered.
Australian Aboriginal languages share a number of unique linguistic features, and they are the subject of much research interest.
