The Armenian language is an Indo-European language spoken by almost 10 million people around the world. Only about 4 million Armenian speakers live in Armenia and neighboring countries Georgia and Azerbaijan, with the remainder living in countries around the world, including Russia, the United States, and France.
The Armenian people were first recorded in texts from the 6th century BC, but the origin of the language is unknown, and Modern Armenian has no known relatives. Some linguists believe that it may be distantly related to Modern Greek, and it contains loanwords and influences from many other languages, including Persian, Latin, and Turkish. The Armenian alphabet dates to the early 5th century.
