Aramaic belongs to the Northwest Semitic subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic language family and is closely related to Hebrew and Arabic. This was the native language of Jesus, and parts of the Bible are written in Aramaic.
The Aramaic alphabet dates to the 8th century BC, and the language spread when the Persian Empire began using it as a common written language for communication across its realm. Modern Aramaic, or Neo-Aramaic, is actually a language family comprised of several dialects.
These dialects are spoken today by over 400,000 people, primarily Assyrians, in communities in (or originally from) Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. Since Aramaic-speaking communities are often isolated and many dialects cannot be understood by other speakers, the Aramaic language family is endangered.
