Native American languages (or Amerindian Languages) are spoken by the indigenous peoples who live throughout the Americas and Greenland. There were originally thousands of languages that linguists have attempted to classify into hundreds of language families, including isolates with no known relatives and unattested languages of which no direct record exists.
It is thought that this linguistic diversity originated from migrations from Eurasia of peoples speaking different languages before 12,000 BC. Fewer than 800 languages are still spoken, and although many languages have survived thanks to intensive preservation efforts, most are endangered.
