Information about the Albanian language

Albanian is an Indo-European language spoken by over 7 million people in Albania and Kosovo, with speakers in neighboring countries Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia and historic settlements in Italy and Greece. The origin of the Albanian people is unknown, but they are thought to have descended from ancient peoples who lived in the Balkans, possibly the Illyrians. The earliest known texts in Albanian are from the 15th century.

Albanian is not closely related with any other living language. It contains loanwords from a variety of languages, including Greek, Persian, and Arabic. In 1908, the language was standardized and given a modified Latin alphabet.
