Meaning of the Name Fenimore
The name Fenimore was adopted by James Fenimore Cooper (1789 - 1851), an American writer whose real name was James Cooper. Fenimore was the maiden name of his mother, and she asked him to adopt this name because there were no men of her family to continue it, and she did not want her ancestral surname to disappear. Thus, James Cooper changed his name to James Fenimore Cooper.
The surname Fenimore could have two different origins and meanings:
1. It could be derived from the English place names: either from Fennymere in Shropshire, or Finmer in Oxfordshire. Both place names have the same meaning of a stagnant mere, derived from Old English "fyne mer".
2. According to another theory, the name could also be derived from the Old French words "fin" - "fine, splendid" and "amour" - "love" (ultimately from the Latin word "amor").
