The name Daniel comes from the Hebrew name Daniyyel meaning "God is my judge".
In the Old Testament Daniel was the Hebrew prophet central to the Book of Daniel. He lived in the 6th century BC and served in the court of the Assyrian kings Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar as a dream interpreter and fortune teller.
The story of Daniel being thrown into the lions' den by his enemies and surviving with the help of God was quite popular in the Middle Ages, as was the name. The name has been especially popular throughout the turn of the 21st century.
