Meaning of the Name Alban

The name Alban comes from the Latin name Albanus, which is of uncertain derivation. It could be derived from Alba, the name of the numerous places in the Roman Empire (derived from Latin "albus" meaning "white"). It could also be derived from the Celtic (possibly British) word "alp" meaning "rock, crag". Yet another possibility is that it could come from Alba (later Albion in Latin documents), the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland.

Alban was the name of Saint Alban (died c. 304), a Roman citizen who housed a priest, converted to Christianity, and became the first British martyr for it. Another Saint Alban Roe (1583 - 1642) was a Benedictine monk, priest, and martyr. As an English name Alban was occasionally used during the Middle Ages. It was later revived in the 18th century, but has never been common in the English-speaking countries.
