Meaning of the Name Abner
The name Abner comes from the Hebrew name Avner meaning "father of light" or "father is a light".
In the Old Testament Abner was the first cousin to King Saul and commander-in-chief of his army.
When Judah split from Israel, Abner installed Saul's youngest son as King of Israel in opposition to David, King of Judah.
Later Abner joined David's side and gave him control over the tribe of Benjamin, but was killed by David's commander Joab.
As an English name Abner has been in use since the Protestant Reformation; it was somewhat popular among the Puritans in America, though it has never been common as a given name in England.
