Meaning of the Name Adrian

The name Adrian has two meanings:
1. As a masculine name it comes from the Latin name Hadrianus, a Roman name meaning "from Hadria". The most famous Hadrianus was the Roman emperor commonly referred to as Hadrian, whose family hailed from Hadria, a colony now called Atri in Abruzzo in central Italy. (This Hadria was actually a colony from a larger Etruscan city now called Adria in the Veneto region of northern Italy. The larger Hadria may have been the namesake of the Adriatic Sea.) Hadria is of unknown derivation. It could be derived from the Latin word "atra" meaning "dark, black" or possibly from the Illyrian "adur" meaning "water", "sea". Some historians also claim connections with the Illyrian god Hatranus (or Hatrani). As an English name Adrian has been in use since the 16th century, and enjoyed a popularity boost at the end of the 20th century.
2. As a feminine name it can be a variant of Adrienne. It can also be used as an independent name.
