The name Camellia comes from Camellia, a genus of flowering plants, native to eastern and southern Asia from the Himalaya east to Japan and Indonesia.
The genus was named by Carolus Linnaeus after Jesuit botanist Georg Joseph Kamel, who first described it in the 18th century.
