It is a Latinized form of the Germanic name Amal (1), which was a short form of various Germanic names beginning with the element "amal" meaning "work, labour" (for example, Amalric or Amalasuntha). The name became quite popular in Germany in the 18th century after the accession of Anna Amalia, Duchess of Saxe-Weimar (1739 - 1807).
2. It is a variant spelling of the Hebrew name Amalya.
