The name Aino means "the only one" in Finnish. It was invented by Elias Lönnrot (1802 - 1884), a Finnish philologist who was the collector and compiler of the Finnish epic the Kalevala.
According to the legend, Aino was a beautiful girl who preferred to drown herself instead of marrying the old Väinämöinen.
