Meaning of the Name Abishag
The name Abishag comes from the Hebrew name Avishag, which is of uncertain meaning. It is probably derived from the Hebrew words "abi" - "my father" and "shag" - "go astray". Another theory is that it could mean "wise, educated" in Hebrew.
In the Old Testament Abishag was a beautiful young woman from Shunem who was brought to the dying King David in order to serve him.
She was a Shunamite, and some biblical scholars speculate that she may be the heroine in the Old Testament book Song of Songs whose name is unknown but who is referred to as a beautiful Shulamite (Shulamite was a woman from Shulem, while Shunamite was a woman from Shunem. Some scholars suppose that the terms are interchangeable).
